Sled Comparison Help
As you can see by my sig. my sleds are a little dated and I'm looking for a newer model to add to the lineup. I'm trying to choose between the following three sleds:
1. 98 MX-Z 583
2. 98 Formula III 600
3. 98 Formula III 700
The MX-Z is $2500 and the Formula's are both $3500. I would be doing trail riding most of the time. Is there a huge speed/power difference between the MX-Z and the Formula's? Enough to trade off the MX-Z better handling?

If you're doing mostly trail riding, save the $1000 and go with the 583. The only time you'll notice the speed difference is wide open on a lake, etc. Plus the 700 is quite a bit heavier than the 583...

There is a new player in the game. Just got a lead on a 97 MXZ 670 with a starting price of $2000. The milage is a little higher but if I can get it for $1700 or $1800...
BTW...I'm in the Bay City area.

Sounds like not a bad price if it's good condition. By the way, welcome to the forum. Another Michigander!

I have to agree that the MXZ 670 sounds like the best deal. I am not a big fan of the Formulas. They were great back in the day, but I would personally go with an MXZ.
Just make sure you get to test ride the sled before you buy it.

I agree with the rest of the guys on that MXZ 670. I have had a couple riding friends that did have a 670, and the thing absolutely ripped! There is something about that 670 Ski-Doo made that is special. Sounds odd, but sometimes I see just the 670 engines on Ebay, and they always sell quick. Like smallengineguy mentioned, be sure to look it over really good, as those MXZ's were rode by guys that liked to go fast. Check the track, tunnel, hyfax, body work (for dents, dings or cracks) also check the shock mounts for any loose welds. Check the compression on both cylinders. If it all checks out, grab it!!!

Thanks for the help. I'm going to look at it today. He claims it is in absolute mint condition and the only thing he has ever replaced on it is the pull starter because he needed a new rope but the dealer gave him such a good deal on the whole unit, he replaced it all.
The current owner said most of the miles are U.P. and Canada trail riding. BTW, the milage is 9400 mi.
I'm a little concerned that with the track being original that it will soon need to be replaced, but we shall see.

9400 miles is very high! Be careful. If it is the original track, than yes, I would be concerned. Be sure to give it a good look over for any broken or missing lugs, tears or uneven wear. Check the idler wheels and hyfax. I would ask the seller if he has ever done any kind of rebuilds or piston jobs on this sled. The high milege may be OK if he has done the necessary maintenance. I just can't believe a sled with over 9000 miles has not had any work done on it. Double check the cylinder pressures as well.

You should checkout snowmobileauction .com. I picked up my 99 Mach Z 5K miles for $2,500. I've had it 2 years with no problems. The mach is fast (similar to your formula 3's) and I love it. However, If I had to do it again, I would go for more suspension and less speed (I like riding the trails). I'd be looking at the MXZ's. I don't know much about the 583's though. If your looking at spending $3,500, I would start considering a new MXZ 500 HO. It's really a 600. My buddy just got one at an Indiana Dealer for about $5K plus tax.

I wouldn't buy a sled with that many miles for that much unless it's been rebuilt....sorry...Just my 2cents.
