1993 Mach 1 670

I am looking at buying this machine, I know nothing about Skidoo sleds, other then the old bastards from the 70's

First thing how were they for durability and ride, and overall how good of a sled were they. I will be using it for riding around my farm, and some ditch hopping with buddies.

Second this sled is a project sled, the frame is cracked around where the engine sits, It has never been wrecked according to the owner. He thinks it is cracked from stress and whatever else. So I am handy with a welder and can get that all fixed. I have not seen the machine yet, I am going to go look at it this weekend.

My question is what else should I look for He said the engine was gone though about 2 years ago, about 1000 miles ago or so. Had a new track put on 2 years ago. Overall pretty nice shape for it's age.

I can pick it up for around 400 bucks.

What do you think

i think thats a decent deal. maybe offer 300 for the cracked frame. but otherwise my opinion is those were great sleds for the early 90's. great reliable motors, with lots of power... i have the same chassis with a smaller engine, and it's the best beater i have ever owned. they don't have a great ride compared to new sleds, but it rides suprisingly better than polaris indy's of the same era that i have. with the newer track and rebuilt engine that sounds like a solid sled for only 400, (minus the cracked frame lol). but you might want to double check the compression, and check the sled over for other signs of abuse... the frame doesn't usually crack from engine stress so it sounds like it might have been beat on a little... possibly jumped it and cracked it?? not sure... but overall that would be a great sled for local ditchbanging and beating

Well I got him down over the phone from 600 but I will throw him a low ball price of 3 once I look at it.

He claims it was never wrecked or jumped or anything like that, which I can pretty much say ya right. I agree with you that the frames usually don't crack unless they were abused. I will check compression. The engine is out of the sled right now which sucks because I cannot hear it run. He gave me the name of the dealership that rebuilt it for him, So I can call there.

The ride has to be better then my 91 Indy 500. Which actually didn't have that bad of ride to begin with. The power of the 670 will be nice compared to the 500 too. I will have to go look at it and go from there. He said it does have some crack in the seat cover which is pretty normal on a sled that age.

So that's where I am at, You making my choice easier knowing they were a pretty good machine

Yup. If i was to buy another project sled i'd go for an early 90's 670... haven't ridden that motor but i've heard they were rockets and bulletproof. and like i said i really like the chassis.
good luck with the repair if you get it!

the fact that the engine is not in the sled changes everything. I wouldnt go more than 300. The good thing is that will make it easier to weld up the damage...but think of it like this... are you willing to pay 400 for a sled that has a cracked bulkhead and an engine thats in a box? maybe youll get lucky and it will be a sweet little sled after a bit of work, OR maybe your opening up a can of worms that you really dont want to...

I have 2 of those chassis sleds. They are pretty good. The fact that the engine mount is cracked is a cause for concern, though.

Well I went and looked at it, he claims it was never wrecked or jumped, well the way the frame was cracked AND a motor mount was cracked, it definately had to have been jumped or wrecked. He was trying to hide the fact that the crack was caused by abuse. The hood had some cracks in it, the ski's were both off. Something was fishy there. The engine was full of fresh two stroke oil, maybe it was for storage, but I was thinking he could have filled it for compression.

Anyway I walked away from it. I offered him 200 bucks to take it off his hands and so i wouldn't go home with an empty trailer but he said he wanted 450. I said WTF you told me 400 the other day LOLOL.

So I left it there.

Thanks for the replies and info guys
