question on 01 skandic

im looking for some help, my friend has an 01 skidoo skandic 500 and he let his son drive it, this has the hi-lo range plus reverse, while he was riding it he shifted from hi to lo and it broke some gears in the gear box. hes being told around $250 a gear to replace them, does anyone know if this gear box has to be on this sled or could it be removed to simply a belt drive operation, understanding that he`d lose hi-lo range and reverse. just looking for a cheaper fix!!! thanks for any input.

I've done it on an Arctic Cat. I had to take it apart to see how to do it, but I bought a gear that went right on the bottom and top shafts and a chain to fit. Worked perfectly.
