Do I really need the exh pipe aluminum covers?

95 Mach1 670. Took the aluminum covers off my twin pipes last night. What a mess! Even though the pipes were in a dry location during the summer, the fibreglass cloth between the pipe and the cover was still wet in some places. Pipes have been cleaned up now, but I am wondering if I need to put the glass and the covers back over them. Anyone run without the covers?

No covers or anything on the pipe for my phazer. it gets hot, but doesnt harm anything. Although on my brothers 99 Mach 1, one of the plug caps was touching the pipe and it melted the rubber off the cap. make sure nothing is touching the pipes and you should be ok.

Part of the reason the pipes are insulated is to keep the heat in the pipe when the engine is running. The pipes are tuned, and when the manufacturer tunes them, they are tuned at operating temp. If you are running hard and snow gets on the pipe, the pipe is immediately cooled, so the tuning will be off (because they are tuned for a hot pipe) so your performance can suffer. Your results may vary.

Actually makes sense. I'm wondering if I get something like header wrap that will do the trick. Not sure if I can get the same material to replace what was there.

Header wrap will cause your pipe to rust out.

I know you can buy more insulating material and reuse the covers or get the whole pipe ceramic coated.
