clutch cleaning question/sticking clutch

i did a search and didn't come up with what i was looking for.

my problem is my primary sticks while engaging. i took the belt off to watch it. right at 4000 the primary kicks/jolts in (should it be smoother). then i will revv the engine and the primary will come together.. but then i let off the gas and the clutch returns it hits about 4000rpm, and it releases with a bang and it jolts back to idle..

now i have taken the clutch apart cleaned the crap out of it.. and the button are new.. it feels stiff to move when the spring isn't in there...

also i was trying to move it from the back yard to the front just on the grass i can't get it to go. i give it gas. the more i give it it just bogs down and smokes the belt.. but sometimes it will engage and take off.

i have also cleaned the carbs. new spark plugs. ALL new fuel lines.

Bustamove,

If the movable sheave is not moving smoothly when there's no spring in the primary, you may have a bad primary bushing. Some are repairable, but it takes some special tools to get to it... if you have one clutch, pay to have it overhauled. I sent a clutch to SLP for balancing and repair, it came back looking new and ran awesome!

What temperature are you running the sled at? What is the air screw set to? Try one turn out to see if you can get rid of the low end bog... if not, try turning the air screws in 1/8 of a turn until the bog is eliminated. If you bottom the air screw, go back to cleaning, and pay particular attention to the fuel and air passageways leading to the pilot jet. You may have to poke a small wire through all the holes to get the varnish dislodged so the pilot jet works properly. (I use one strand of telephone cable with the insulation still on.. seems to work well for me).

Fuccillo,

Sticky weights can definitely cause a higher engagement RPM and a very harsh engagement. Because the weights are sticking, the engine has to turn the primary faster than normal before the centrifugal force of the weights overcomes the sticky weight. A faster engagement will result. You could also have a sticky roller or a sticky main bushing, which can cause the same problem.
