583 wont idle down

When I first start it it will sit there and idle good. Then I go for a ride and when I stop it wont idle down. The idle is set to about 1800 and when I stop it will idle up to about 2500 to 3000. Any help would be helpful. Thanx in advance.

Test for any air leaks around the carb flanges and crank seals.

How long will it last with bad seals? I'd like to get through this winter with it.

i dont know how good of an idea it is, but my high school autos teacher told me about this. spray carb cleaner on the carb boots and any seals, if the engine revs up, you have a leak.

off topic, i see your from lincoln maine. we have a camp in lakeville.

My sled started to do last week, but if it sits for a 30 seconds it idles itself down to 1800....do you think improper idle adjustment..because i just readjusted them because my idle was way too low...I will check for any leaks while waiting..

Thanks

if it does this after you were on the throttle for awhile, its normal. the pistons get really hot causing a high idle.

I'll try the carb cleaner trick. I dont think it can make things any worse.

Just curious, because this question has come up quite a bit, and the usual answer is that you have an air leak. I haven't seen a "its a normal" response to often. I've got the same problem and have checked everything with quick start and carb cleaner as well as a phys exam. No leaks. However, i've also read that the crank seals could still be leaking, and yes it might be my mag side seal. I keep checking my plugs and piston wash, and everything looks great. I've checked during and after runs. So here's the question?

Has anyone ever adjusted there idle down while the engine is warm and reving higher? Thoughts please.

Thanks

are you saying adjust it when its revved way up at like 3000rpm? that would totally ruin your actual idle when it comes back down. no matter how low your idle is adjusted, when the pistons get really hot, there always gonna keep the idle hanging.

Reviving this...got 18" of snow! and had a chance to run the MXZ 583 out yesterday. When I start it it idles right up to 3500-4000 rpm and doesn't back down. I ran it for a while and it runs out just fine but a little boggy when taking off. After I stopped and let it run a little it idled back to 3000 but no lower. I shut it off waited a minute and restarted and it idled down around 1800-2000 and stayed there. Is this normal with this engine or ??? From the above posts I can't tell if it is normal or not. I want to run it again this afternoon but want to make sure if I should adjust anything first. Also, I checked the plugs and they are a nice dark brown so it isn't running lean. Any ideas?

not normal, everytime you let off the gas it should go down to its idle... check your spark plug as for the bogging, make sure its not running on one cylinder
