Question wiseco or kimpex pistons?

i have been reading bad things about kimpex pistons, should i just order wiseco pistons instead? i aready ordered kimpex at half the cost. are wiseco pistons worth twice as much? after reading the bad reports on kimpex i am kinda scared to use them. its for a 1996 ski-doo formula sl 500 fan cooled sled. thanks for any help

There is nothing really wrong with Kimpex pistons- they will work as designed when installed in an engine with the correct bore diameter. They are cast in Taiwan as are the Parts Unlimited LeMans pistons, the GPI pistons, LLP pistons and the SPI pistons. All these cheap pistons are of the same quality- they all vary dimensionally to a degree and metallurgical makeup COULD be another variable that would be hard to detect. With factory pistons, be they ART, Elko or Mahle you can generally rest assured that you are dealing with the same quality as the engine was manufactured with. Wiseco forged pistons are an excellent choice, forged from quality alloys and machined properly to provide many hours of service.
I build engines every day and use all these brands depending on the customer's needs and financial fortitude. My only requirement when I use any of these pistons is that they are installed in a properly measured straight bore. Lots of people will look at a cylinder and say it looks fine, no "scratches" so use the same size pistons again. They don't realize that there is usually lots of wear around the exhaust and intake ports and this will allow too much piston clearance. The new piston rocks in the bore and a premature failure results.
Bottom line, all the brands listed will work as designed when installed in a straight bore of the proper diameter with no excessive wear. Don't worry about the Kimpex pistons in your 503 if the pistons are properly installed. As I like to say, "It's NOT a space shuttle we are working on here"

thanks irondog. the mechanic thats working on the engine had me order pistons .040 over size. says he is going to hone it out, or bore it, can't remember witch. i think he said with a hard stone. he is a very good car mechanic, said he has done quite a few snowmobile engines and never had any problems. i have always been happy with his work on my cars. hope i"am not making a mistake not going to a ski-doo dealer but he is giving be a good deal on labor.

Going to a Ski-Doo dealer does not automatically guarantee quality workmanship. You will probably be OK, sounds like he's on the ball.
