broken ring

well this is the 93 plus 583 i just bought a a couple weeks ago and it just died on the trail a few days ago, i took it apart and ring on cluch side is broken with missing pieces on exhaust side..there is no damage to the cylinder but i was wondering if anyone might know what might cause this? there seems to be lots of oil getting to it, the carbs were set to rich and the R.A.V.E. on that side was leaking oil but i found it was the boot that was not on it right causing the oil leak...the other cylinder still has 145psi so should i still change both sides (piston and ring)or maybe just leave that side alone
I hope the missing piece of ring went out the exhaust port but is there anyway to be sure without taking the whole engine apart..a guy at a local shop said if the cylinder is not scored teh ring must have went out the exhaust but that doesn't sound right
thanks for any info

if you have a magnet probe, check in the case for the broken piece, but most likely it did go put the exhaust.
As long as you only need to replace the rings on that piston, do just that and new gaskets and you are good to go.
Still use new ring breakin procedures though.

My 92 broke a ring (no idea why) and it went out the exhaust. i re-ringed just the one side. Give the cylinder a light hone before you reassemble it.

oh ya got off topic a bit...i think then i will just leave the other cylinder alone and replace (piston and ring) just the one side because the piston is damaged a bit on top. I will pick up a magnet probe to try when i get the parts tomorrow.
hopefully everything will go back together easy
