sled dead on trail

Was out for about 45 minutes on my 2000 380 Touring E and it died. Luckily someone came by and towed me home. It was about 29 or so degrees out. I have spark and can smell gas. Turns over but won't fire up. I sprayed "Quick Start" into one of the spark plug holes, but still would not fire up. When I turn it over, the lights come on. I changed both spark plugs on the trail, but that did not help. Any ideas??

To have a running motor you need 3 things: Proper fuel/air mixture, Strong spark, and good compression. Is your spark strong? What is your compression?

Was it running, then just died? Or did it start losing power?

It was running fine and then just stopped, the motor stopped and I glided to a stop, all within about 5 seconds

Check spark with an inline neon tester, just to be sure. Then do a compression test. It should be 120 psi or higher.

fuel filter or choke?

This past weekend, I checked the fuel lines and fuel filter. I took off (what I believe to be) the fuel filter that is on the end of the fuel line in the gas tank (brass unit with mesh and a spring wrapped around it) and it seems to be fine, but after I removed it, I got the sled to start. The fuel filter looks to be in fine shape and the ball-bearing inside (which I think is to keep the gas in the line) seems to work fine. I replaced the choke cable a week or so previous, so do you think it might be the fuel filter or could I be having issues with the way I set up the choke? Once I replaced the choke cables, I have made several short runs but could the sled be "flooding" with the way the choke is set? Is is ok to replace the old fuel filter just with a inline plastic fuel filter or should I spend the $15.00 or so vs the $2.00.

I started the sled again tonight, but to keep it going until it warms up, I have to choke it and apply the throttle, then once it starts, have to feather the throttle to keep it going.

thanks

Sounds like you might have a compression problem. do a leakdown test after the engine warms up.

Clean the carbs.
If you have to keep choking it or tickle the throttle to keep it running at idle, the idle circuit is partially clogged.
