Safari 377 LC
hey everyone
I restored a 1990 Safari 377 LC for my girlfriend. After many months of hard work I had the sled out for a run today. It seemed to run ok (ya i forgot how slow 377's are) but I pulled the plugs and they were almost white
Anyway, this condition was happening at both full and mid throttle it seemed. So, I moved the needle clip down. It was second from the top. I tried every position on the way down and it did get better but it is still not a toasty brown colour. It is almost a weird pukish colour (maybe a mix between brown and very white.)
Anyway, so I pulled the carb. Everything looks pretty clean, however there is some rust in the float bowl. It was running a bit of old gas. Can old gas cause a lean condition? It is currently running a 325 main jet. I looked it up on the fiche and the fiche says 280. Please someone help me! We are heading up north this weekend and this is my chance to get the girlfriend interested in snowmobiling!

Whoops. It was actually running a 250. I guess that's why it's lean. Would 3 sizes down like that cause it to lean out that baD?

Grr! I looked at the wrong fiche. The stock jet is 250 and I am running a 250. Should I try jetting up guys? Maybe go pickup a 260 270 and 280? Or should I go higher?

Try the 270's. Does it have the usual 2 stroke choppy idle, or does it sound smooth, like it's only on one cylinder? Might be crank seals.

I had a shop do the work. THey had to soak down the carb.It was really dirty
So i'm wondering. Can you buy a carb cleaner that isn't aerosol based? Cause I just paid 3 hours labour for something I could have done myself

Yes, it comes in a gallon can and has a parts basket in it too.

Gunk makes it in the gallon can, you just drop it in and let it soak.

ya so I got the sled up to the cottage and it kept bogging. Turns out they replaced the needle, seat and main jet and did a leak down test. Still not running right. Most of the time it won't get over 1/8 throttle. When it does it only goes about 40km/h. (about 25mph).
If I "twist" or "jiggle" the carb a bit it seems to get better temporarily. Any ideas?

Is the carb boot cracked? How do the plugs look? Wet/oily or light tan to white?

It's strange. Neither colour. I put brand new plugs in and they are the "new spark plug" colour but smell like gas.

Are they wet? I'd replace the primer, they are known to leak by.
