drive belt tention or loosness

I had lunging at low end, put on a new belt and the lunging was gone, found belt too tight and sled died when stopped, I adjusted the chain case so the belt would slip freeley, now it seems to run properly, but have no room at home to run it out, now I wonder if it would be too loose when the driven shifts at a higher rpm, how do I adjust the belt correctly to prevent slippage , thanks
