Greetings,
I bought a package of one owner MXZ's. One is a 98 440 fan and the other is a 99 600. They look new and each has less than 900 miles. Problem... The 600 worked fine first time out for about half dozen starts' then I shut it down and once restarted could not get above 3000 RPM. The key light was flashing as well. Manual says DESS sytem malfunction. I took it to Skidoo for reprograming and a new teather key. I had the old one reprogramed and the new one done as well. Both were working when I left the dealer. At home I took it for a ride and after a 1/2 hour shut it off. Came back, tried to restart and nothing doing. I could get it to run for about 3 seconds at an idle after choking but that was it. I put the other teather on and it would run but again the light was flashing and I could not get above 3000 RPM. I switched back and forth between the two teather keys and they acted the same each time. What is going on? Any ideas on cure and cost of such. I don't want to waste anymore of this excellent Pacific NW winter. Thank you for your help.

Bring it back to the dealer and tell them it's still AFU. THey should fix it again for free!

yes, have the dealer look at it, most of the time when mine did that all you had to do was wiggle the teather cap and it was fine, yours sounds like more than that

Make sure that the tether and terminal are both clean and the tether is properly seated. Make sure you are using the right key.

there is no key on the 99 600 mxz, it has DESS (digital electronic secutiry system), meaning only that tether will start that motor. the flashing light means the tether is not seated properly. make sure it is sitting flush.
as for the sled not goin gover 3000 rpm..did you clean the carbs verrifying the pilot and main jets are clear before you took it out for your first ride? the rave valves should be cleaned also.

If it's not going over 3000 RPM thats caused by the Dess not making a good contact. You already mentioned it ran fine before. I wouldn't mess with the carbs till you figure out problem 1-the dess.
JMO but don't mix up your problems

I agree that it is the DESS that is causing it to not go over 3000 rpm. Get that fixed and you should be fine. Go back to the dealer and tell them to get it right this time, for free.

this was his first ride of the season on the sled. he never mentioned he cleaned the carbs. a carb cleaning should be the first thing you do before the first ride of the season on any carbed sled, especialy if you didn't store it away the previous spring.
it sounds more like a contact issue with the tether than it does a dealer mess up.

my 99 670 done the same thing i just give the teather a twist and its fine. just bad connection is all mine was. but it done the same thing in the UP on a 1400 mile rideBTW dont do it on a short track) i put dry gas in the fuel and it came out of it as well. so those were my rsolutions but it was very cold in the UP and fresh fuel so dunno the quality of fuel i bought hell maybe watered down for all i know??? try some HEEt fuel additive in the gas and your running 93 octane i assume right??
