MXZ 600 HO Adrenalin 2004 ring problem.

I am considering a skidoo MXZ 600 HO Adrenalin (carbed) 2004.

The “ring” problem thing has me worried. What exactly happens when the rings go? Major engine failure?

Can this “ring” problem be prevented in any way? If one replaces the rings (or rings and pistons?) every, say every 1000 km, would that prevent this problem occurring?

Anything else I should know about this sled?

the ring problem has been corrected with updated chrome rings. what was happening was the moly face on the ring was flaking off. this caused added heat, loss of compression and pin or ring failure. if ran too long it can take out a piston and cylinder. if you want to be sure, just take the top end off and inspect the parts, if the pistons and jugs are fine re-ring it and go on your merry way for 6000 trouble free miles.

Go to a dealr with the serial number of your sled and they can check if it ever had the upgrade done.

Thanks guys.

Smallengineguy – why would a dealer know? Was there a factory recall to replace the rings with the updated chrome rings?

yes there was a recall, if the sled had the update done it would be recorded.

no the ring problem was not limited to the 800s, both the 600 and 800 had the same problem, i think it just showed up sooner on the 8s

A buddy of mine (the one that I convinced to buy a sled earlier this year, then we went out once, he caught the snow-disease, so he sold the 98 summit and bought a 04 summit 600) said the one he just bought had the recall done at 300 miles. It now has 500 miles. So as long as the recall was done fairly early everything should be fine. If it hasn't been done have the current owner do it before you buy it so if they find any other problems, it's not on you.

Thanks guys, great info.

The sled is new (0 km). So if I buy it, it would get the new rings before the first ride.
