electrical problems

I have a 95 grand touring 470 with reverse. I just bought it and no power to lights, gauges, speed opmeter, and tach. i checked all connections and replaced the voltage regular,. no help. the main wiring harness to the hood was too close to the exhaust, and melted a few coverings off the a couple of wires, the wires appear to be fine, and i re-wrapped them, still no power. I do not have a battery, and do not think i have any relays,(am i right, or not). the ground wire is connected good, but not sure what else to check, sounds like a short ,,,errrr

double check the rest of the wiring. most likely burned the lighting coil out of it.

fixed,,for now

Thanks for your help. a neighbour of mine took it home for a look-see. he opned the stater near the recoil, and found someone did not fit the wires properly, and worn the wires and shorted them out(he patched the stater but said i may need another later if if it doesnt hold). he took out the voltage regular that i had changed, which was $129 can at the dealership(ouch), so i bought a jober at Canadian Tire for $60 taxes in, he then put in the old one and it all seems to be fine. my dim burnt out, and he said he didnt think my brake light worked, but the tail light did work, i thought i checked the bulb, but it could have shorted out like the dim,,,i think..lol.

oil light also comes on when you apply the brake. check the brake light switch and related wiring to the light.

yes to add to my problems, the brake light is on as if my brakes are being pulled. the cable is at the correct tension allowing for the little button to be engaged and disengaged. but the oil light and the brake light is on all the time, i switched the two wires, on each end and it did not make a difference. would the brake switch be shorted out from when the stator shorted?

the light is getting power from somewhere. try disconnecting the switch and see if the light goes out. if it does its most likely the switch.
