If they were both SC-10, you should be able to. Lay them out next to each other and see.

The 96 is probably a C-7 improved. You need to move the skid mounting brackets on the tunnel back a few inches. I put a SC-10-2 suspension on my 1995. It works great.

I dont beleive it is an sc 10 it is the rear skid with 2 shocks on the top of the skid where it bolts to tunnel. How far will I have to move it to make it fit?

suspension swap

If your removing a sc-7 and installing an sc-10 then the brackets need to move forward. The suspension mount holes need to be 24.75" center to center. Grind off the bracket rivets from the inside so the heads stay in, take a strip of wood or metal approx 2" wide, drill 2 holes 24.75" center to center the same size as the mount bolts put front bolt through tunnel and strip ( strip on the inside of tunnel)swing it up to line up with your loose bracket, insert bolt and clamp bracket to tunnel. Drill new mount holes and rivet in place ( do not use aluminium pop rivets, they will break)Thats it!!You will be amazed at the ride differance!!

Oooops! your swaping the other way. Just measure the mount holes off the older 1 and follow the same instructions above with those dimentions.

Just take accurate measurements from the 97 and move your bracket back on the 96 to match. Use steel rivits, you might want to rebuild shocks before installing skid new hyfax ect.
