Have you cleaned the carbs?
Check the fuel pump for sufficient volume output.
A weak on will make for hard starting.

If you have to hold the throttle open, that means it's too rich. Fuel is leaking by the needle/seats in the carbs, the fuel pump has a problem, etc. I'd check that first.

has it had the updated rings? when it is running and you put it in reverse does it die or switch over? if it dies it shows signs you need new rings. that would be my guess, low compression. i would check compression, if you let it go too long you could lose a cylinder also, rings are cheap compared to a whole top end.

I had a 98 summit 500 that would be terrible to start after you stoped for 10 or 15 min. I would have to hold it wide open and pull 3 or 4 times (sometimes more). It had a cmplete engine rebuild top and bottom end this didn't help. the carbs were all gone through. new needle and seat and the sled ran flawless ( not rich at all). I don't know why but many skud's from the 90's had this problem.

One of my favorite sleds cause it would crush 600's in the 1/8th mile. the thing was tuned to the nuts, probably the best running sled I've ever had.

Hope you find out what causes this. At least you know the cheap fix just hold it open and pull.

rings are flaking, time to get new ones. if you wait you will just end up spending more time and money, and we'll most likely have snow when its down.
