Water pump shaft

A question regarding the water pump shaft for a 99 summitt 600. I have to have my original replaced because the plastic teeth were stripped. Just curious as to why Bombardier would decide to use plastic instead of a more durable material for such a important part of the engine?

Well there are a few reasons but the biggest is that all of us riders keep screaming for a more powerfull and lighter sled. Plastic is lighter than metal so it wins. there are other reasons such as plastic is less prone to corrosion and to expansion and contraction that light weight metals like as aluminum are.
