583 High idle

Hi,
I have a idle problem on my 95 formula Z 583. Last year it would idle about 3400 rpm until warmed up then drop right down to 2000 rpm. Now it usually stays at 3400 and only drops down once in a while no matter what the temp gauge reads, blipping the throttle doesnt help either, other than that it runs great. Its not a cable issue, there good and free. Still on last years gas but i did add stabil last spring and fogged the motor. installed new plugs also. Any ideas what could cause this? Do i need to pull the carbs and clean them, i did last year and only rode 300 miles all last winter do to crappy weather and deploying over seas. Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanx in advance.

I would clean the carbs regardless..... Every year! It only takes 45 minutes.

Did you touch the idle adjustment screws on the carbs at all when you had the carbs out last year?

Make sure they are equal, and if need be adjust them to lower the idle.

There should also be 1/8" or so of play in the cable before it starts to lift the slides. Sounds like cable tension may be too tight.

other things that you need to check are leaking carb boots and crankcase seals. sometimes a bit more air being sucked it will cause a high idle.
