670 problems

I went and fired up the 97 mxz 670 today and well I ran into a couple of things. First I thought my arm was going to fall off before I would get it started!! (About 20 pulls) Then when it did stay running, the throttle wasn't responsive for the longest time. I was able to rev her up but only after priming it while running. I think that it might be the carbs, but not sure. Help me please!! Thanks in advance guys!! (Or Gals)

somethins keeping it from gettin enough fuel. Check the fuel on/off and make sure it's opening fully. And it may be time to pull off the carbs and give them a once-over. And good job on puttin the stabilizer in it

First check the fuel cut off switch. Happens to me every damn year

If it's open than pull the lines and pull it over. If gas pulses out, cross the fuel pump off the list. Pull the carbs and make sure the throttle slides are working smoothly. Last of all clean the main jets. If the gas was stabalized than it should be alright.

For future reference store your sleds with a full tank. Any open area in the tank will cause condensation to build up on the walls and drip into the gas.

I pulled the fuel lines today and fuel would come out while pulling it over. I take it the carbs are next on the list, but I don't have any experiece with working on these type of carbs, and don't want to bring them to the dealership because the closest one is about a hour away, (And the $50/hr shop time) so any help would be appreciated.

take the carbs out and clean them, and if that doesn't work, the fuel pumps are very simple.

Go to the "How-to" section of the engine section here in this forum. There is a carb cleaning thread there.

I actually pulled the carbs out of my 670 last night and cleaned them. They're still out so if you're having problems than I'd be happy to take some pics of their guts if you think it might help. May just be a clogged main jet or stuck needle valve!

Thats crazy, when you replyed I was out in the garage pulling mine. I got one done and put back in but still havn't done the other. I just took off the bottom and sprayed everything down w/ carb cleaner. It looked really clean, so I didn't want to rip it's guts out. (mabe i should have?)

Just hold it up to the light and make sure there's nothing blocking the main jet. That'd be your main concern!

It may be a good idea to check the fuel pump while you have the carbs out. Just take the cover off and make sure the diaphram isnt cracked, and all the valves seem to be in tact!

Also check your compression, and make sure your plugs aren't fouled or loose!

I got the carbs put back on tonight. I figured it would take a few pulls to get the gas through, but on the 2nd pull the knot came loose and all I had in my hand was the handle. So I fixed that and 2 more times of pulling it over and it fired up!!! Thanks guys for all your help. I'll try it again tomarrow to make sure it wasn't a fluke or anything like that. Also I've been turning off the fuel valve even if I let it sit for only a hour or so. Is that a waste of time? I know when storing and trailering it you should but just curious if it's fine left on for a few days or so. Thanks again

You shouldn't have to shut the fuel off during the season. If you need to to stop leaking, then you need to replace the inlet needle and seat in the carb.
