well with a 500 youre not gonna be doin very serious things in the mountains but...
you could do a few bolt up mods to the engine like pipes and little things
then youre gonna want to take on some powder so youre gonna want a longer track im guessin yours is a 121
and get a track with big lugs
good luck

Yeah, it'll be a little hard with a 500. Where in Maine are you that you don't get snow??

I had a sx500r with a 2" paddle, smaller drives and clutching. I we much farther up then anyone would have thought.

2" track $150.00
Drives $80.00
Clutching about $450 after dialing it in.

Track was purchased at haydays it was a 121X15X2 and it work rather well for a shorty.

forgot, It had a silencer as well.

first off-Welcome to the forums!

There's a few other threads on this sort of thing, and the track is a major part of it, but it usually becomes a spiral of things that you keep doing to squeeze every last bit of power and floatation out of it. With a bigger track and some good clutching you will be able to stay afloat and do alright. And since it's a lighter machine it actually works to your advantage only having a 500. Don't put a lot into it though. Once you get bitten by the mountain/boondocking style riding you'll end up just getting a purpose-built machine. And if you don't like it make sure you save the old parts so you can go back to flat-landing like most of these other guys
