I just got a 1996 Ski-Doo 440 Touring LE.I have not picked it up yet but the only thing it is supposed to need is a fuel pump and fuel cap. Traditionally, I replace all fluids, filters and belts when I get something new to me. What else should I plan on doing or should I be checking?
This is my first ( and at 69 probably last ) snowmobile. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Clean out the gas tank really well. No cap on it, who knows what got inside.
Grease up everything. The skid will have at least 3 zerks, one on each ski spindle and many machines have one on the ski-pivot as well.
The most important one of all, is the one under the secondary clutch. Drive shaft bearing and speedometer cable.
Some machines also have them on the steering column, although, I'm not sure the Touring LE will. My Touring E-LT 380 does not. I usually just put grease on anything that is suppose to move.
The rear shock on those machines was weak. It might last an hour or so, depending on how rough the trail is, before it just gets soft. There is a gas replacement for them if you want a longer lasting smooth ride.
Thanks. Any secret grease to use? Any recommendations on the gas shock? I will take the tank off and really clean it. Is it plastic or metal? I am use to cleaning motorcycle tanks and then coating them. Is the same procedure done on snowmobiles?
Don't need to coat them. They are just ABS plastic. Usually tough to clean out because the top hole has a lip around the inside, but do the best you can.
I just use standard automotive lithium grease. Marine grease doesn't do so well because of the cold temps.
I use "Green Grease" because it's available at most of my local autoparts stores.
I would replace all the fuel lines. Ethanol is a real pain and causes issues. The pump should need a simple rebuild kit. Don't forget the impulse line. That's usually standard automotive fuel line vs the clear powersports line used elsewhere on the sled.
Carbs should be pulled apart, cleaned and reassembled. Again, our friend ethanol.
