Formula z 583 starting problem

i have a 1997 formula z 583, it has a extremely hard pull to it. someone had mentioned to me that it could be from a crack in the crank case and oil was leaking into something and thats why it so hard to pull/start. anybody heard of this? if not anyone know what is wrong with it?
thanks,
DR

583 leaking oil

i have had 3 583 and they all leak oil.
one into the muffler, one a little from the crank somewhere and the third from the crank somewher like a sieve.

I don't know why but the last one could be from putting it in to the lake and maybe cracking the crank

I will let you know why if i can ever figure it out, if any one knows let me know

Thanks

Might just be hard compression. Does it pull much easier wit hthe plugs out? With the belt removed? Try to eliminate other things first.

compared to other sleds (zl440, xlt580, zr580, vmax 600), my 583 has real high compression.

When i take the plugs out the sled is fairly easy to pull over. I havent taken the belt off because i have had hardly anytime to work on it plus there is no snow around me.
Thanks for the help,
DR

583 hard to pull

My 1994 583 pulls a lot harder than my 2001 800 summit. The reason is mainly the recoil. If your 1997 has a old recoil (small diameter and black) and not the new larger diameter metal ones that will make a big difference. The compression is a big part as well but not all the reason because the pull is not jerky through the cycles like my 800. I suspect the rotary valve creates the friction difference. I don't know how the rotary valves are lubricated but maybe that is the problem, the only thing is my '94 583 has pulled hard from the beginning harder than any motor i have ever pulled over!

My '94 583 also starts the first pull but only if it is fast enough. At -5 i have to pull it out slow 3 x before i can pull it fast enough to start it.

Just think you are getting stronger with every pull!

Rotary Valve Lubrication

My '96 583 is really hard to pull too, glad it starts on the first or second pull. I'll be looking for the newer larger diameter metal one soon.

Here is a link that shows two sources on how the rotary valve gets lubricated. It shows a marine engine, but, the rotary valve looks just like the one on my 583 and my 500.

It looks like it gets lubricated when the oil injectors inject their oil.

Another source, if your burning too much oil, is an angular tube, item 10 on the quinnsmarina link, that comes from a small oil tank. Looks like it oils the main bearings in the engine. If the oil seal is bad, it could also oil the rotary valve.
