dumping fuel through manifold

OK so this formula plus keeps geting better and better.. I think theres something wrong with the carbs..
I pulled the exhaust off to fix the Recoil that broke. and the air box. and pulled to make sure the recoil was good b4 i put it all back together and GAS dumped out of my pipe and out of the header every time i pull the cord. so i took the spark plugs out and its like a GEISER when I pull. what the heck is going on with this thing...? does it just need the carbs re-tuned or do i have something much more serious going on????

The float needles aren't closing to stop the flow of fuel to the carbs. Go to the carb cleaning section in the engine how-tos.

If the rear of the sled is off the ground, it may not let the floats close properly, flooding the engine.

i had about 5 gallons of gas in the pipe. i was scared to take the springs off to dump it out, sometimes if it slips out of the pliers it will spark. i put a screwdriver through the loop and pulled them off that way. i found out that neither of my fuel shut off valves worked because i had them in the off position.

Hi guys, i just seached and found this. I had the rear of my mach 1 lifted up for about a week. drove it about a mile and shut it off. Now its floods both cylinders on one pull, does the float arm get damaged somehow?

Thanks
Cory

Shades of old threads!

Almost always, the reason for fuel to flood like that is a sticking inlet needle/seat. Usually, it's varnish or some kind of debris in the inlet that sticks the needle open. Gas flows big time and can leak by the needle, filling the crankcase from gravity only. When you pull the rope, you are throwing the raw gas from the crankcase into the combustion chamber, which can hydro-lock the engine.

It's possible a float is the problem, but not often. Sometimes floats get saturated and don't 'float' and will press on the inlet needle, allowing gas to flow. Sometimes the arm gets bent or the float gets out of adjustment. Neither of those is common.

Another possibility, but usually only on one cylinder, is a hole in the fuel pump diaphragm. If there's a hole, gravity will feed gas through the hole and into the crankcase through the impulse line. That is easy to check; take the impulse line off either the fuel pump or the crankcase. If there's gas in the line, the fuel pump may have a hole.
