Electrical question

I just bought a pair of 97 grandTouring 500's and I would like to take the starter and battery out of these units. I am wondering if there would be any electrical concerns if I ran the machines without a battery. I am wondering if this would damage the electrical regulator as the battery is no longer providing resistance or if there would be any other concerns.

Thanks for your help,

MH

why not what?

You don't see why there should be any problems? I was under the impression that there was a special regulator used to charge the battery when the machine was running.

I would like to remove this dead weight

no, i dont think they used a different regulator. if someone else knows differently they can chime in, but i am pretty sure they are all the same. as far as the dead weight goes, you didnt buy an MXZ, the twelve pounds your gonna lose wont be that great of a difference in my opinion, but its your sled.

weight

ok, great so your saying there won't be any issues by removing the battery.

I'm on the fence with taking them out. I'll probably leave them in untill I get stuck in some deep powder.

Thanks for your help.

Non electric start sleds have a voltage regulator, if you have the starter you have a voltage regulator w/ a recitfier. The rectifier provides DC current to charge the battery.

Should you sell the electric start to someone you might want to swap regulators with that person.

As far as just taking it out i don't think it will hurt anything.
