mach 1 clutch

i want to change the spring position on m 94 mach 1 and i need to know how to get the helix off, it appears to be just a giant snap ring. do i need any special tools? what position would you recomend it being on? its in the 5th of 6 holes right now. the reason i'm changing it is because right now it pulls hard then feels like its stuck in first gear for a second, then shifts and feels crazy fast.
thanks in advance.
