95 xlt high idle

Ive got a 95 xlt and when running im adjusting the idle and I can not get it to drop.. ..when I burp the throttle and engage the clutch the rpms will sit @4k til I kill the sled... all carbs have been cleaned and new chokes....I have sprayed around crank seal and all boots and no leaks anywhere....does anyone have anyidea?.....I also have a secondary issue and that is after warming up the sled bogs down at 4k rpms like its lackung fuel

I have the same issue minus the secondary. It happened last Saturday when I was out on a ride with my club. I ended up tossing it on the trailer of shame, lol, I didn't want to smoke my engine. But, I too have replaced my chokes and done everything you have.

is your the 579 (580) or the 597 (600)?

Mine felt like it had power, but yet "tight" at the same time, I also have a strange sound like a "ping" or "knock" like the old cars did if they didnt have Leaded fuel. It seems to only do that at a higher RPM, if it does it at idle I can not hear it due to its subtle nature.

this morning however when I was examining my plugs, I did notice some frost on my 3rd plug (PTO side) I'm wondering if I have an O-ring or head gasket beginning to fail?

Re: 95 xlt high idle

Its the 600.....generally when the idle stays high its a air leak.....in your case sounds like you might haave a bad head gasket...I would run compression check and start there.......my sled takes off like a bat iut of hell but idle stays high and bogs after being warm at 4k rpms for now reasob

Doing a comp test will be tomorrows project. I did a test back in October, she had 125 across the board. I'll see what's going on in the morning.

If the test checks out and comp is still the same, I'm going to pull the carbs and exhaust, see if there is any scoring on any of the skirts.

That would be the mext option.....I was in the shop tonight and mine are only doing it ubder load and for some reason I think that the spark is cutting out.....not so much starving fuel.....im lost with it..I have two seperate xlts that are both doing it

Are they both the same year and CC? Do you think its the CDI box, trigger, pulser or control coils? I have a Clymers 90-95 repair manual. if you need any test procedures let me know and I can probably scan a few pages and email them to you.

also, in doing so, we may be able to fix all 3 of our machines

I'm just hoping I dont have to do a complete tear down...I just replaced the center cooling hose, it was rubbing on the bulkhead and ended up with a hole worn into it, and I just refilled the anti-freeze....I hate wasting anti-freeze.

Re: 95 xlt high idle

It would be very odd for both machines to have the same spark issue.. they r both 600 one is 95 other is 96..... I readjusted the mixture screw on the one and idle is fine now but....I tested th spark while running and the spark is not cutting out so it leads me to fuel... the machines are both running lean which is telling me they r starving on fuel....not sure where to go I have cleaned all carbs and both fuel pumps and I have straight line from tank to pump to eliminate the filter and valve....replaced all fuel lines.....im so lost

Have you torn the carbs apart and cleaned them? how about the water trap? Needle and seat alright or worn?

Also, check the Jet needle and the Needle Jet. The jet needle, is on the end of the throttle and the Jet Needle is IN the carb, in the venturi opening.

question, what size are YOUR carbs for the 600? are they VM30SS or VM34SS?

also, check your pilot jet and main jet.

your specs for a 95 XLT is as follows (according to the Pure Polaris Parts Catalog)

Jet Needle - (6DP17-3) #3130374
Throttle Valve - 2.0 #3130464
Needle Jet - 166 #3130166
pilot #35 #3130066
Main - HX,HD#210 #3130124
Valve Needle - 1.5 #3130016 Sub..#3131146

I have a 96 XLT that had the high idle RPM syndrome (year before last) and the fix for me was to not burn ethanol fuel. Not saying that it has anything to do with your issues but I went back to straight unleaded fuel and haven't had any issues since. I get my fuel at my local marina, and I carry a couple of fuel cans in my trailer for the trails. My fuel stores better as well. My Sport also started some weird running characteristics in this same time frame that a fuel pump kit cured. I don't know if it was a coinidence or not, but I'm staying with the regular unleaded fuel as long as I can get it. I just put a Mikuni fuel pump into my recently aquired Indy Lite that only had 675 miles on it. The original pump stopped pumping in the right carb circuit. I have a hunch the fuel is the culprit in my circumstances.

Thanks! TJ

Re: 95 xlt high idle

Working on my xlt today,I found something rather interesting, the main jet on #1 was in the water trap. That could explain the erratic running issues.

Re: 95 xlt high idle

I also noticed that the adjusters in top of the carb caps were backed off. I just did a running test, still runs erratic, like its misfiring.

Check the throttle cables inside the rectangular plastic housing - I pulled them loose when pulling out the airbox on my '97 to fix the choke plungers.

hey Slednecks18, You have any luck with your XLT?

well, the other day, I did a comp test...126 a crossed the board.

#2 carb did have a plugged pilot. Cleaned them,

adjusted my carbs that day and there was no change.

Today. I decided to try again from scratch. Got my bible out, and checked the specs, bottomed out the throttle slides. turned in my idle adjusters until they lightly touched the slides.

I then turned each one a quarter turn at a time till I got a consistent idle. It's still idling off, but it does come back down to rest at where it started now.

I'm thinking that mine is more of a timing issue.

I dont think i'm supposed to be able to change the plug leads around and it still run.

what's the correct position for the coil pack wires that plug into the CDI box? I noticed an odd connector. It appears to work by alternating ground/power much like chevy does with their turn signals.

Greetings,

UPDATE: I've gotten my 95 XLT to flatten out, run smooth, and I've checked the plugs.

I've taken RJ Gleason's suggestion and turned my pilot jets out another 1/4 turn. this has really changed the performance of this machine, In the BEST way.

when I first got it, they were BLACK. then after the carb adjustment they turned WHITE - indicating a lean condition. the additional 1/4 out enriched the system to bring the plug tips to a wonderful GOLDEN color.

Thanks RJ.
