polaris indy 650 clunking sound when take off

just got done riding my 1989 polaris indy 650 for the day and noticed at takeoff that there was a constant clunking sound. It went away when i got up to speed but then when i let off the gas it makes same sound. Speedo just went out cause of a snapped cable, got a new cable put it in and still doesnt work. could it be the bearing inside there? any answers will be helpful thanks.

Bearings are always suspect when the older sleds lose the speedometer. Pull the belt, remove the secondary, remove the speedometer adapter and take a look. You will have to clean out the grease, but be careful. If the bearing has failed, there will be sharp pointy things in the grease. Trust me on that.

Sure can! But it is one of a few possibilities. It is a quick easy check. Very advisable to follow BC Dan's instructions. If it is good you can cross it off the list. If not, you'll be glad you checked!

Did you try changing your belt? A wear spot on your belt will give you a clunking sensation, and it can feel like something is binding in the track or a bad bearing. I'd try changing the belt before ripping anything apart.

Sorry, just read your post a second time. Scrap that belt idea.
