Another chain oil question

I have a 2000 xc 500. Just pulled the chain cover, dropped the oil put a new gasket in and put in back together. Went for a long ride yesterday and checked it about every 10-15 miles. Everytime it was blackish with small shavings on it- no big pieces or anything. Let it sit over night same thing, checked this morning blackish- no sludge or anything just a lot dirtier than I would have thought. Is this normal? Sled ran great. Oil is polaris synthetic.

Another chain oil question

Not sure on color but shavings are normal because the shavings come off the gears and their is a magnet on the dipstick that is why their are shavings on it

when you were in there was your gear solid(as in no play in it) if it turned black it could be a sign your bearing seal is gone. Not positive on that but I use atf and it always stays red.

Everything looked and felt great in the chaincase. Polaris550 I am not so much worried about the shavings, I did realize about the magnet-more so about the color seemed to be dirty right away for being brand new.

Might just be old oil and sediment working out of your chain. I would change it a couple more times over the season and see if it starts clearing up.

When I change my oil, I remove the cover and spray the whole case/sprockets/chain with WD40 or brake cleaner. There are a lot of nooks and crannies in the chaincase that hold sediment and junk. If the chaincase isn't clean, the new oil picks that stuff up pretty quickly. It doesn't take much to make the oil look dark.

I run amsoil full synthetic. if you are at all worried about the shavings, check chain tension. If it was too tight that would explain a bit too many shavings. rule of thumb is as tight as you can get it using only your hands strength, then 1/4 turn back out.
