1989 Polaris 650 speedo not working?

I have a 1989 Polaris Indy 650 and the speedo is not working. Checked cable and it is connected good up to the speedo gauge. Can't get to the other end of the cable because it is not visible. What do you think is wrong? Will I have to take the engine out to get the the other end of the cable?

Read this first.

The other cable end terminates behind and below the secondary clutch at the speedometer gear adapter. Removal of the engine for repair is not required, but removal of the rear suspension and driveline likely will be.

Yep - Broken speedo keys are usually a good indicator that the bearing is toast.

found the problem. The cable inside the speedometer cable was cleanly snapped in half lol

Good for you! That's the best kind of speedo issue. My '04 RMK was exactly the same!!! I re-routed the speedo cable when I replaced it - making sure there were no tight bends when the cowling was closed.

I had the same issue with my 86 Indy trail. part of the cable was missing but the Key was intact.

easy fix. it works great now. I also made sure to lube the new cable. I used Liquid wrench with Teflon. it works great.
