1996 Polaris XLT600 High Idle??

Back story.. bought the sled with SLT triple pipes that I ended up selling and replacing with a stock exhaust.

Now the sled idles between 2-4krpm and when you rev it up it takes a long time to rev back down.

Any ideas ? I think it was running lean when it had the pipes on it, plugs didn't look great.

Also the choke does not work properly anymore, I half choke it till it kicks and then have to keep the choke off. If you choke it at all while running the motor stalls.

A lot of times, a high idle indicates the air/fuel mix at idle is lean. Two main causes are leaks in the rubber carb adapters or crank seals, or the pilot jet circuit is clogged.

To check the adapters and seal, with the engine idling, spray some starter fluid behind the clutch and on the adapters. If there are leaks, the idle will change. For the pilot jet, turn the air screws in 1/8 of a turn at a time to make the air/fuel mix richer. If you bottom the air screws with no change in performance, it's likely that the pilot jets or the air or fuel passages to the pilot jets are plugged.

Prior to me swapping the pipes, the sled idled around 1500-2k rpms. All that has changed to my knowledge was the pipes.

Which screws are the air screws on my carbs?

The small flathead one. Believe it should be somewhere between 3/4-1 1/2 turn out, depending on elevation. They should all be the same. Out of curiosity how much did you sell the Slp Pipes for? Ive seen em go for 200-250$

Your choke should make the engine stall when its running. Once i starts turn the choke off to let it warm up. It adds too much gas when running and can cause flood.

When you changed your pipes did you go back to stock pipe jetting? Chances are it is jetted for your slp pipes.

I was thinking that too, but that would cause bogging more than high idle, which is caused by lean conditions. Bigger jets would cause a rich condition.

I saw one screw that had a grip on it so I could turn it with my fingers.. I tried to crank them all in a bit but it didn't seem to make a difference. I got $220 for the pipes on ebay but I've seen them go for more.

I was thinking the same thing at first but it does appear that I'm running lean vs rich. I wouldn't be surprised if I had stock jetting.

I guess if I can't get it idling down I may have to rip the carbs off anyways and see whats in there.

If I keep blipping the choke I can get it to idle around 2k but as soon as I take off and come to a stop again it's idling at 4k.

That would definately indicate its lean. id still clean the carbs..see whats in there and do what BC dan says. Chances are your pulling in air somewhere you dont want too. check seals and carb boots as he explained. blipping the choke brings it down by adding extra fuel telling you you have A. too much air (leak somewhere) or B. not enough fuel (possible dirty carb or to small of pilot jets)

Is the idle staying at 4k when you stop? or is it just for a minute or soo? your pipes being hot will cause a lean condition if youve been pulling hard then stop too, which is normal and can be fixed with a larger pilot jet in some cases or just a throttle blip.

yeah it stays at 3500-4k forever unless i bring it down by killing it with the choke

First check the carb boots. No cracks or holes is good. Then check carbs. Verify jet sizes (let us know!) and clean them
