IQ 600 Shift - Speedo quit and strange plug

Bought my wife a IQ600 Shift a week ago and the wife and I went out riding today and her speedometer no longer works. Any ideas what I should be checking? Also I noticed that there is a 4 pole flat plug under the hood on the clutch side - it is not connected to anything - what is it and should it be connected to something?

I would suspect the speedometer sensor has gone out. If you look at the end of the driveline under the secondary clutch, you will see the wire to point you to the sensor. It's easy to remove and replace.

The wiring harnesses are used on a lot of different sleds. If everything but the speedometer is working properly, I would suspect that the connector is for accessories you don't have on your Shift.

I can not find the sensor in any parts breakdown that I have looked at. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Could it be the strange plug I am seeing is the speedometer sensor unplugged? Does it have a flat four pole style plug?

Okay when I got home tonight I checked that plug it has nothing to do with with the speedo. My speedometer is not electronic. It has one cable from the speedometer to the driveline. What should I be looking for?

There I go, assuming again. I figured when they went to the electronic stuff, all the sleds got 'em.

Often, the loss of the speedometer in the solid axle driveline sleds indicates a PTO bearing is failing. The speedometer gear is driven by a key from the end of the driveline and as the bearing fails, the key shears and the speedometer stops working. You can pull the speedometer adapter off and check the key. Then clean all the grease and check the bearing. Sometimes you get lucky and it's a bad speedometer gear or a bad cable, but often, it's the bearing failing.

Any easy way of changing out that bearing? Looking for a how to? There is a local guy that works on sleds but he is about three weeks behind and I am two hours away from the nearest Polaris dealer.

Dealer told me today that on my year and model of sled the throttle cable is prone to break. He figured with only 3000 miles on my sled the bearing should still be fine. I will check out the speedo cable and the key. Will I get a good view of the bearing while I am in there?

You should be able to see it. I'd tip the machine up on its right sideand check to see if there is any movement when you push and pull on the drive shaft.

When you remove the adapter, one side of the bearing is visible. If it has failed big time, it's very visible once you clean off the grease. The bearing does have a seal on both sides, so damage to a marginal bearing may not be visible. I would do what steepndeep suggests.

The seal on the tunnel side of the bearing is open to the tunnel and all the junk that flies around in there. With both sides sealed, greasing the bearing through the speedometer adapter doesn't really get any grease into the bearing, but does surround the bearing with grease, which can exclude water from one side of the bearing. Some guys I know will remove the seal on the side of the adapter so that grease does enter the bearing, but I would be afraid of pushing the seal out of the other side.

I'm assuming you meant speedometer cable and not throttle cable; failure of the throttle cable won't affect the speedometer...

Yes speedometer cable. I have ordered a new key for the speedometer as I assume that is what is wrong. When it arrives I will tip the sled on its right sis and check for movement in the bearing. How does one remove the drive shaft in order to change the bearing? I assume it has to be removed.

You'll need to pull the skid out, secondary clutch is often in way, Muffler to access the chain case. NOT a wicked hard job but easier with extra hands and a heated garage OH' be VERY careful tightening the lower sprocket in chain case bolt!!!! They shear VERY easy when torquing (I learned the hard way)

Weather has warmed up a bit so spent some time after work with the sled. I took the speedo cable off the drive shaft housing and moved it around and my son said the speedo would jump and move so I assume that the cable and the speedometer are fine, it must be the key inside the housing. Waiting for that to arrive. I tipped the sled on it's right side and tried to see if there was any movement in the shaft and all seems tight so fingers crossed.
