Time to re-plate cylinders?

Well, I got the jugs pulled off my sled today, and there is scoring on the intake side of the mag side cylinders. I can see a couple very small little "pits" the wall where the scoring is. I can feel the roughness with my finger nail, but it isn't close to deep enough to be able to catch my nail in it. Will a light honing be good enough, or do I have to get it replaced or re-plated?

You're sled doesn't need to win that drag race or get that high mark... as long as you can tow you're buddies out at the end of the day!

If the scoring is through to the aluminum, you will need to get them replated. Nikasil is tough stuff, the aluminum isn't. If it's not into the aluminum, you can probably get by with a light honing, although regular hones are pretty ineffective on nikasil...

One way would be to swab some muriatic (hydrochloric) acid on the area and look for bubbles. The acid won't react with the nikasil but will react with the aluminum. You can find muriatic at Home Depot in the pool cleaning supplies, but when I got some there, I had to buy 2 gallons. I can clean aluminum from about 255 more cylinders before I run out

good idea thanks! I can still see very small lateral scratches throughout most of the scoring. I will give that idea a try though still
