1985 Polaris Indy 440 power issues

Hey every one. New the the forums here and new to snowmobiles as well. I got this sled givin to me from a friend and has been a little project for me to keep busy with this winter. I did the obvious work to the engine but need some more help! I cleaned carbs, new fuel lines, new spark plugs, fresh gas, filters. Took it out after that and it wouldn't go over 5500 RPM and it was a struggle to even get it there. It had trouble just to get going as well. I would slam the throttle and half the time it wouldn't even move, would have to give it a push to get it moving. Clutch maybe? Belt? I have no idea.

Thanks for the help and happy new year!

Look at your plugs, is one all wet?

Sitting on the sled facing forward, the clutches are on the right side hidden from above by a clutch cover. You will need a clutch puller for the primary clutch (or use the water trick to pull it). You could just pull the cover off the clutch as well for a quick inspection, in which case you won't need to take the clutch off the machine a all.

You're sled doesn't need to win that drag race or get that high mark... as long as you can tow you're buddies out at the end of the day!

Might need a little more instruction than that haha. In the engine compartment? Near the disk brake? Under the air box?

Thanls

they should be to the left of the air box under a metal cover. The Primary is the clutch connected to the engine via the crank shaft. The secondary set behind it, connected to the jack shaft. Check the plugs before doing anything with that though

Plugs are pretty much brand new. I fired her up and let it run for a little. Plugs were a little moist but really not "wet"

If it's runs better with choke on then you probably still have problems inside carb (dirty pilot, main jets or plugged passage). You can clean clutch on the machine if necessary by removing belt, closing clutch with pry tool on small boss on moveable side and spider and while open place small 3" extension between roller and weight to keep clutch closed while you clean weights and rollers on two of the towers. Repeat at another boss to clean weight and roller that you were using to clean the other two. Use Simple Green or brake cleaner, blow out with compressor. Do not use any oil on rollers or weights.
