96 XLT 600 Coolant Check Valve Flow Direction?

Just picked up a 96 xlt 600 that came with an overheating problem.

Trying to troubleshoot/replace everything that could be causing it.

In regards to the check valve that is connected to the coolant overflow, which direction is it supposed to allow coolant to flow? To the engine or to the overflow? Just trying to make sure mine is installed correctly. It appears to function right (I can blow air back into the engine, but if I pull the hose off the engine I cannot blow air into the overflow). But just making sure.

Thanks
