1998 Polaris Indy 500 pilot jet fully closed - Help!

Hi, I just bought this sled and went to clean the carbs. I disassembled and tried to turn the pilot air jet in to determine the number of turns and found that it was already all the way in (fully closed)! I checked the second carb and that jet was also fully closed. This is the first time I have seen a carb with the pilot air jet fully closed. Could this be correct? If not should I assume the previous owner miss set them? What would a good default setting be or is there a procedure on setting a messed up pilot jet?

Its a 1998 Polaris Indy 500 (Fuji) with Mikuni Round slide Carburetors.

Thanks in advance for the help!

It's likely the carb was so badly in need of cleaning that it caused a lean condition and the previous owner turned them in to compensate, rather than fixing the problem. Do a thorough cleaning and try them out. If it's still too lean you could go up a size on the pilot jets.

Once you have the carbs thoroughly clean, turn the air screws out one full turn from lightly seated.

Thanks! The carbs were VERY dirty so that may explain it. For the life of me why wouldn't he just clean them!

From page 5.15l of the service manual, 0.75 turns on the air screw.
