600XLT #2 Piston no exhaust
I got a 94 XLT 600 that I finally pulled out of the shed this season. It has about 1000 miles on it and has not been started in 10 years. I pulled it out and put new fuel in it and it started right up. When I took it out for a burn it was sluggish and a buddy told me it probably was only firing on 2 out 3 cylinders, and he was right the middle piston exhause pipe is cold. There is zero exhaust gas going thru it. I took the air box off and revved the engine (no belt obviously). Fuel comes out the intake side of the carb. I placed my hand over the intake and revved the motor and it sucks my hand tightly to the intake side real good, but no fuel is getting burned or exhausted. I have STRONG spark (this is the confusing part). My limited mechanic background says a valve problem but since it is 2 stroke I guess the use reed valves....but arent reeds used for intake only, not exhaust?? Anyways fuel seems to be getting to the cylinder but is not exhausting. These symptoms scream no spark but I assure you the spark is good. I have NOT done a compression test but I think it is useless because my hand sucks tight to carb when I place it over the intake... I dunno. We have a ton of snow finally so this thing needs fixed and RODE HARD haha

Thats not a reed motor its piston port. first thing I would do is clean all the carbs real good. And confirm spark on the center cylinder. Ur missing one of the 2

Install new plugs. Make sure all plug boots are screwed tight to wires ( maybe remove boots, snip plug wires back a 1/4" and reinstall boots). Check to ensure all plugs have good spark before installing and then clean carbs. Might also want to check compression on the center cylinder (or look at top of piston) to assure it does not have a hole in the piston.

Do not rev the motor with no belt. That's hard on the crank and clutches! Like aduck said its a prison port motor, no valves as those are 4 stroke and no reeds. But like the others said clean carbs first and some new plugs than see what happens.

If you have good fuel and spark, I would pull the center carb and the exhaust and take a look at the piston skirt. If the skirt is broken, you would still maintain compression but fuel management through the engine would be impossible with that cylinder. The broken skirt could also be plugging up the exhaust. Just a thought.

wow thanks for the tips!! i wasnt aware responses would be so fast! thank you. i am guilty of reving motor with no belt...whoops. i had very good spark while engine was at idle... is it at all possible to have strong spark at idle but it weakens off as rpm climbs? i was hesitant to take the carbs apart to clean thuroghly because I might not put them back together properly. Last time i took a carb apart there were little springs that flew everywhere! i might go out to the shop tonight and tinker with this cause I want this pig to sweat during the holidays! we just got a foot of snow!!

You have mikuni round slide carbs on that xlt probably the easiest carb to clean. No jumping parts. N just take your time and party attention.there a sticky in the how to for reference.

well, except for that pesky spring above the slide I've had that one get away from me trying to put the slides back onto the throttle cable a time or two. At least it's big enough to find!

ya I usually leave the slide intact. Avoids that. I've had more issue with the gasket up there falling and getting stuck on the spring

Thank you all! I replaced the wire and coil for the middle hole. Problem solved. I need to search for carb adjustments now, including jetting.
