94 polaris RXL 650 track wont turn when sitting on ground. only when lifted up. help!
I have a 94 polaris RXL 650 triple.. just got it. Only 1200 miles on it.. It will start, but then if i give it any throttle it sounds boggy and the track wont turn at all, but if i block up the rear end, the track seems to turn fine... any body have any idea of what it could be? Clutch maybe? Im new to snowmobiles, but know motors fairly well.. and it ran perfect when it was stored for the summer.

And dumb question... but is the secondary the one in front or the one closer to the rider?

Secondary is the one closest to rider and I would take it apart and clean. Pay attention to which hole the spring is in on the helix.

yes, its only one center bolt holding it on, then it should slide right off the jackshaft. Cleaning them is pretty basic, once you have it off, remove the outside bolts and everything should come apart, use a parts diagram if you need to help you along the way. Remember where the spring is set (if it has different settings for the spring) and inspect everything while you have it apart, check for any excessive wear.
here is the part diagram for that clutch:

Clean the primary clutch and make sure the belt doesnt have any worn/burnt spots. Also make sure the key that goes between the secondary and the jackshaft isnt broken. Its just a square piece about 4 in long. With that broken it could still spin off the ground but not have enough torque to when its on the ground

I got the secondary off and am taking it apart right now to clean and go through it, is it gonna come flying apart when i take it apart because of the spring inside?

Out of curiosity, is the shaft key all in tact (or missing)? The jackshaft is keyed along with the clutch. Without the key and with some muscle you can spin the clutch around the jackshaft. Double check that first before you take the clutch apart. My brother messed with my sled and lost the key and it did what you are explaining.

Haha the key is prob. A $3.00 part. I had a feeling this was your issue. Line up the keyed part of the clutch to the keyed part of the shaft and when you get a key slide it in. It might need a light hammering to get in. Look on ebay or amazon or go to your local hardware store. Find the size key it takes. Good luck!

Well it could of fell out inside the sled before you took it apart. If the clutch seems good as is try putting it back together. There quite easy to put on and take off after the first time. How long is it? Ive had one that broke in half on a go kart and wasnt long enough.

Seems a little short. How you can tell is put it on the ground with the hood up, rev it and does the secondary spin?
