polaris indy clutching problems maybe??

My sled will only hit an ex amount of speed even with more throttle left.it hits the top speed then wronp on the throttle and it goes no faster but the tach goes up. Primary clutch shows belt wear and its only about half way working up the clutch. Primary clutch does have clutch work done to it but the secondary is stock but well maintained.kinda stumped. Thought about maybe my belt is to short but its the correct length as i read on the internet.thanks in advance for the help guys

Where is the belt riding in the secondary?

Do the "sharpie test"

Draw a straight line on the face from center to outer edge.
Run it and see where the line is worn off.
Put on a new belt first.

That will tell you more about what is going on.

And we all know that everything there is true.

Seriously, though... RJ has given some good guidance for seeing what's going on. You should check the offset and deflection of your current belt as well. You could have a belt that is worn / stretched and not really sitting in the clutches correctly. Switching to a new belt could correct that. Or, you could end up in the same or similar situation if something is out of adjustment.

Since you can check deflection and offset in very little time, and at no cost, I would do it. That way, you have a 'starting point' to compare to when you go to the next step.

Sounds like you need to go through both clutches. If the primary is binding, the secondary can't shift any further. More HP will just slip the clutch.
