02 Edge X 700 Thoughts - Snowmobile Forum: Your #1 Snowmobile Forum

I have an 02 Edge X 500 with E/S, Reverse, and presumably the Edge suspension (since it doesn't have the M10 sticker anywhere). The sled is pretty much stock, with the exception of some hand guards. Everything works, and works well, it's been meticulously maintained, and the only thing it needs is a new battery.

I had previously considered picking up an 04 Classic 800 even though that's more motor than I want (let alone need). I ended up passing on it for a variety of reasons, and now I've come across another possible grab.

2002 Edge X 700. It's identical to my machine in every way except for the motor size and the hand guards. I know the 800s have crank and VES guillotine issues. I know the 700s have neither.

I have some questions, though...

- The 700s were apparently prone to mid-range lean condition issues that were fixed in 03 with a different needle and smaller jets. What's the best way to tell if this particular 700 suffered any problems from this issue in its 3000 miles and can I swap the jets and needles to those from the 03 to eliminate the issue completely?

- Are there any specific issues with this year sled or motor to be aware of outside of what I've already mentioned?

- Which will I regret more: dumping the 500 to get the 700 and having way more power than I really want/need or missing out on trading up for what could end up being about $750 out of my pocket after selling the 500?

I don't ride overly aggressively, I don't race, I don't ride lakes, and I'm always on the trail (I seldom break trail).

Thoughts?

My initial though is, if it's not broke, why fix it? If it were a power issue, then you might want to upgrade. My understanding is that 500 is a great po motor, with good power, and makes a good trail sled which likely gets better mileage than the 700. Sounds like yours is in great shape! Got any pics?

That's what I'm trying to figure out... Does mine have all the power I want? I really haven't had a chance to ride this on the trails, so I don't know what to expect from it there. And, the 700 might be a "cheap upgrade" from the 500. I think that, if it were a 600, I wouldn't bat an eyelash and I would grab it. Believe it or not, I'm actually a little concerned that the 700 is more than I would want. My older brother has never owned anything bigger than a 600, and he rides harder than I do. But, I'm a little taller / heavier than he is. I dunno.. The more I think about it, this 500 is probably all I really need. I know that, when I had the 97 500 EFI, that felt a little too small for me. It had very smooth power, but it didn't the punch of a carb machine off the line, and it was not a VES motor (or even a "real" 500, for that matter).

Since this sled is already registered and ready to go, I will very likely just stick with it and possibly upgrade next year if I find a great deal on a 600.

The only pics I have are a little blurry and inside the trailer, but you can get a little bit of an idea of the kind of condition it's in.

Nice sled! Looks very clean! I just purchased my 02 Xc 600 this year and I haven't been able to ride it yet. I did a lot of research on the edge sleds before buying. From what I understand that 500 VES runs about 100 - 105 HP. My bet is that is more than your cat and a whole lot more responsive. I think it will surprise you on how quick it is. What kind of track is that?

Cat? What cat?

I *think* it's a Camoplast. Not sure. The previous (original) owner has done a lot of maintenance to it over the years. Most recently (like three winters ago, two if you don't count the missing one last year), he put on the track, rebuilt the primary, replaced the jackshaft bearing, and replaced a couple of work idlers / bearings while the track swap was being done. The following year, he had the shocks rebuilt (that might have been when he did the primary - could be off on that). Motor has never been apart and still pulls 120 on each cyl. He gave me a brand new (still in the package) set of Woody's 6" carbides when I bought it. Have had it a year, have only been able to ride it around the yard. I can get it up to about 30MPH in about 400' of straights, but I have to back off quick before I hit the pile of logs in the back yard.

It will look even cleaner when it's actually clean. It's kind of dirty right now.

I think your going to enjoy the sled! Sorry about the mistake on the EFI being a cat! Your Polaris 500 Efi probably was only pushing 80 HP max. Watch out for that log pile
