I recently purchased a 1997 polaris 600 indy. The guy i purchased it from bought it in new york,which does not require a title for the machine only a registration. He did sign off on the new york registration and i have that. My problem is when i went to register it here in illinois i need the body and engine serial numbers. On the identification plate on the sled the VIN number is worn off and unreadable,is the VIN stamped anywhere else on the machine? Any help is much appreciated!

The VIN should be on the registration that was given to you at the time of sale. At least here in Michigan the vin is on the registration.

The VIN would be on the sticker on the right side of the tunnel and should also be stamped into the tunnel in that area (likely under the sticker). Take your time when looking at the sticker to be sure that it's completely rubbed off. Often times, you can still see the outline of the numbers (and it will only be seven digits on that sled) in the sticker even when there is no more ink.

The VIN is 'punched' in the sticker... look very carefully for pin marks through the sticker. Could be hard to see but once you do you will never miss 'em again!
