I would have tried to drill a hole but some of the electrical wiring is attached to the bulkhead right where I would need to drill.....at any rate I got the engine mounts loosened and cover off. Upon taking the the starter out I accidentally unwound the spring!!! what a nightmare! as someone said before you need and octopus to help you put it back together (12 arms).... got it wound back up with two vice grips and everything is reinstalled now! Hopefully it starts.....going to clean the carbs before I reassemble everything.

Thanks for everyones help.

Also noticed my chain case cover was loose and leaked oil until she was dry. Looks like the previous owner was trying to mess with the reverse cable. Glad I found that. Need to refill with oil.

started to clean carbs and noticed the pilot air jet was completely closed. I only removed one carb so I could keep everything organized. Is there a reason the previous owner would have desired this? Does it provide better performance at higher altitudes or something?

It was probably running too lean due to gummed up carbs. Do a thorough cleaning before you start changing jetting.

my intention is to thoroughly clean the carb, but I shouldn't leave the pilot air jet screwed all the way in right? I should back it out a couple turns to allow for air flow right?

No it definitely should not need to be bottomed once the carbs are cleaned properly.

This link is found in the "How To" part of the forum. It's a great tutorial and should help you through the carbs.
