indy 600 triple carb trouble! runs with starting fluid
im so puzzled by this. i put some gas in the carb... and it runs until it runs out of gas. makes sense right? carbs arnt getting gas right? wrong! i can see the gas flowing through the lines, and before i put fluid in the first time after pulling i felt inside the carbs and smelt my fingers. gas. dont smell stale. i pulled the plugs and found something odd. the pto side cylinder smoked out the plug hole while the other 2 did not. spent 2 hours takng carbs apart and cleaning them.

The exhaust out the plug hole is just a function of piston location within the cylinder. That cylinder just happened to be where gas can go back in the exhaust ports and into the combustion chamber.
Make sure the pilot circuit is spotless, you may have to probe into all the passageways with a small wire to dislodge any varnish or debris. Cleaning the pilot jet with a wire can sometimes be helpful as well.
If it's got spark and the fuel is fresh, as long as the carbs are clean and adjusted anywhere close to properly, it should at least start. That's assuming compression is ok...

it ran fine last month. when i cleaned out the carbs i took a pin to the jets to clean them out. i assume all cyl. are getting spark cuz it runs fine when i put gas in he carbs. i even used the gas i drained out of the carbs to start it and it ran fine, so gas is good, i can see it going through the lines, would it not run if just one of the carbs wernt gettng gas? or 2? what is the small flathead screw on the right side of the carbs for?

thanks for the qquick reply. is the pilot jet the one that you can access by taking the nut of the bottom of the bowl? i did take the bowls off and clean inside also. those are the ones i cleaned. 1 was really gummed up,one wasnt bad, and one was clean. gummed one on pto side, ok in middle, clean on clutch side.

The main jet is the bigger one and is usually removed by a hex socket. The pilot jet is up in a tube. Use a small flathead screwdriver with a good end to get to it, if it's stuck at all and your screwdriver is damaged at all, you take a chance of damaging the jet.
The small screw is the air screw, it meters air to the pilot jet circuit. In is less air (more fuel = richer). Out is more air (less fuel = leaner). Initial setting should be one turn out from lightly seated. The pilot jet circuit meters fuel at idle to about 1/4 throttle, so that's a good spot to start troubleshooting.

I got a set of good carbs all cleaned and ready to go on a sled. I have two 600 triples that have no compression. If you want some parts let me know Joshkidner.
