93 xlt 580 sp, carb trouble.

I bought this sled running but with the choke off it idled at 3500rpms. I took the slides out and readjusted them but now it wont start, its getting gas, its got spark, the carbs just need to be synced and tuned. Not sure how far the slides should be open, I read on here about using a drill bit to rough it, does anyone know about the size of drill bit that would work best.
Any help would be great. Im new to snowmobiling and dont have a whole lot of money to take it in. I love snowmobiling cuz it gives me a chance to clear my mind and collect my thoughts.

Thanks for your help.

Did you clean the carbs? There is a great "how to" on the site. Also, if you adjusted the slides you might have too much play in the throttle cable. Check to see if the throttle is returning all the way to the block on the bars. I would start there. Dumb question, but did you turn off the gas? Can't say I've done that before!

Your reason for being in the sport is awesome! With the knowledge on this site I'm sure we can get you running.

1/4 inch drill bit I the bottom of the carbs will give you the right raise to start. Don't forget that you have an idle adjustment on you carbs too.

Back off your idle screws all the way and back down the throttle screws on the caps. Use your idle screws to get the correct lift until the 1/4 bit fits under the slides, instead of the throttle adjustments. Then look into each carb and adjust each throttle screw until the slide lifts and back it off until it sits lightly on the idle screw.

Thanks, I got it running again but with the choke off its still idling at 4000rpms but with the choke half on its around 1000rpm. There is 2 screws on the right side on the carb, the bigger one is the idle and the smaller brass one im guessing is for the fuel. i have the fuel turned out only 3/4 turn. is that about right?

The flower shaped screw is your idle. The smaller is your air screw. As a rule you want to start with it 1 full turn out from lightly seated.

Check your carb boots to be sure the rubber is not cracked. If they are it can cause a lean condition and a high idle.
