You can buy synthetic chaincase fluid for 9 bucks a quart and a quart does 3 sleds. It's not like you're going to have to do a second mortgage on your house buying synthetic chaincase fluid. That said, I don't think it matters a whole lot what you use as long as there's something in the chaincase. I personally prefer thin fluids, as the drag produced by gear oil eats horsepower, especially when it's really cold out. To each their own.
