Please help..identifying 1996 sled (pics)
I know it's a 96' and its a two cylinder air cooled. It also says IFS XTRA on both sides. I was looking to get it for $600-$500 what do you guys think? Im very mechanical and very good with 2 strokes. I havent heard it run and it most likly wont start. It turns over and feels like it has somewhat commpression. Lemme know whatcha think about it. Here some pics:
Thanks,
John

try new plugs and pour gas into the carbs. if it runs you can probably get that money for it. i just bought a 93 indy deluxe that ran this way. I paid $200 and it only has 1700 miles. if its a supersport with a 500 then you can probably get $4-500 if it runs and doesnt have extremely high miles

Im the buyer. I went to look at it and took these pictures. If it is a 340, 440, or 488 can I still put the 600cc barrels on it? I read that the 440's will take a the 600 barrels with some case modifing. I work in a machine shop and do all the powersport machining so I'm confident I can get it going if the jugs bolt right up and the pistons work with the stock 440 rods and crank.
thanks,
john

Look on the manufacturing sticker on the right side of the tunnel. The model number holds the key... Post the model number here and we can tell you EXACTLY what sled it is.

In 1996 Polaris only had 4 models with the XTRA 10 fan cooled.
They were:
Super Sport which was a 432 (440) model # 0960743
Sport Touring which was a 432 (440) model # 0960243
Indy Trail which was a 488 model # 0962761
Indy Trail Touring which was a 488 model # 0962262
Since it's not a 133" track that eliminates the touring models.
So, it is either an SS 440 or a Trail 488.
BTW, it has 34mm carbs. Those carbs were used on many 600's

Makes sense, so I'll say it again.
That sled doesn't have the XTRA suspension system in it as it's not silkscreened on the back of the tunnel on either side. That sticker on the hood isn't even a hood sticker - I'm betting it's something that was intended for the shop or trailer and someone put it on the hood.
Look at the manufacturing label on the tunnel - that will eliminate all guessing.

In 1996 the SS didn't have the XTRA 10 on the tunnel. Based on the stop blocks on the rail it appears to be a XTRA 10. Come to think of it, the trail is an evolved in 1996. So that would definately make it an SS.

You've got too much time on your hands...
Maybe I should get you to *install* that reverse kit for me to give you something to do.
