Edge known problems?
Anyone have the down low on known problems with the 2004 edge 800?
Thanks

The 800 big block is known for having serious issues with crank failure, especially in the long track models. Keeping the clutch balanced and adding a wider PTO crank bearing seems to help, as does adding an engine plate to stiffen up the crank. If the engine still has the aluminum VES valves, those should be replaced with the stainless steel ones, the aluminum ones have had issues. There is little cooling for that area in the cylinder so the valves can melt and fall into the piston. Not so good.
The rest of the sled is pretty well dialed by 2004. When that 800 runs right, it's very potent with LOTS of torque.

There are 2 things you can do that will make that sled pretty bullet proof.
Primary clutch balance is critical.
If the primary isn't very well balanced it puts extra stress on the primary bearing.
Also, that bearing is exposed to a LOT of stress such as when the track suddenly hooks up or when you go from full blast to full break.
There is a big bearing kit you can get for that motor to take care of the bearing issue all together.
The best thing you can do is call Indy Dan and get his advice. He does all my precision balancing on clutches. That is the first thing I do on a new sled before it ever hits the snow.
He can do the big bearing kit and balance the clutches.
Indy Dan (Dan Turen), is the best in the biz, give him a call, ask his advice,

+1 on Indy Dan, he has done a couple of cranks for me over the years. He's one smart guy when it comes to Polaris engines. If you can catch him on the phone, he's GREAT to talk to.

Thanks for the input Ollie. I'll have to file Indy Dans number and call him up.
