Polaris Frontier 4-stroke engine

I have been around the 2-stroke engines for a long time. Does anyone have the four-stroke snowmobile engines and how do they perform compared to your friends that have the 2-stroke engines?

I guess if I get one of these 4-strokes.... I do not want to the last in the pack. I want to be able to keep up or be in front.

Polaris 4 Stroke

Polaris did not discontinue the production of there 4 strokes it is still in the Frontier Touring.This is a two-up touring sled.The Frontier Classic is not offered for 05'

Just wondering about any of the 4-stroke engines that could keep up or out perform a 2-stroke. I heard that Ski-Doo had a 1000cc 4-stroke.......
Just eyeing the 4-strokes...less maintenance in the long run.

they quit making them last year, I have seen some of the engines that came out of warrenty sled and they are a war zone inside. if you must have a 4 stroke go with a different brand.

if you mean the mach z, it is not a 4 stroke, but an SDI. which is their cleaner running 4 stroke. of course, there's the elite, but that will garuntee you a last place finish, unless your friends are on foot.

apparently, the AC T660 runs good, but i dont have any experiance with those.

Hes not talking about the 1000cc Mach Z, he was refering to the 1000cc Legend, which is a V-twin 4stroke.
From everything I have heard about it, its not that great of a 4 banger. Somewhere in between the Polaris Frontier and the AC 660T in terms of performance. So far, Yamaha is the only manufacturer to make a 4 stroke that can manage to truely compete with the 2 stroke performance sleds.

yeah, that was a typo when i said "cleaner running 4 stroke" i meant 2.

i forgot about the legend. i guess if that happens, it's not doing too well. they don't advertise it too well, and the dealers dont push it.

yeah, yamaha's compete with 2 strokes...after they add another cylinder, of course. i want to see a 4 stroke of around the same cc's as everything else magazines compare it to. they may be able to run with the classes of 2 strokes, but they add a lot of engine before they do.

Thats impossible. No 4 stroke can make as much HP as a 2 stroke with all things being equal. To compete with 2 strokes, 4 strokes need to pump more air. Which can mean a few different things; larger displacement, turbo/superchargers, more rpm, and nitrous. Since 4 strokes have a power stroke every other crankshaft revolution, they are at a huge disadvantage to the 2 stroke, and need to make up that disadvantage somewhere, most commonly by increased displacement. Thats why you have 450 CC 4 banger dirtbikes competing against 250CC 2 strokes in the MX world, its gonna be the same way in SnoX too. At first the 4 strokes didnt do that well, it didnt take long though, and now they are VERY competative. Sorry to temporarily highjack your thread gregoryd71. If you want a fourstroke that can compete in the 2 stroke performance world, look no further than Yamaha.

Thanks sledneck27.....just needed some opionions out there.....on the 4 strokes. It seems like Yamaha is the only one that can compete. I will probably wait a couple years and see what kind of improvements all manufacturers are doing...then step into one. My Indy XLT 600 will do for a while.....

Comparing 4 strokes to 2 strokes can get a bit complicated. I have an XLT and a AC 660 Turbo trail, and the 660 walks away from the XLT. My XLT peaked out at 13 mpg and the 660T at 21. Had a run down the lake against an 05 Vector (973cc), he thought we was gaining a bit on my 660T, was very close though. The fuel milage was very close also. As far as the ride I prefer the 660T hands down over the XLT. The XLT (Xtra 12)has a good ride dont get me wrong. I have never ridden a new Yammy so I dont know how the ride compares, historically their ride has been poorer. Rumor has it their ride is getting much better. Everyone needs a good ride no matter what the name is on the sled.

I went through the same thing you are going through now. I presently have a 2 stroke but am getting tired of the smell on my clothes, saddlebags, etc. Early 4 strokes just did not have the kahunas of a 2 stroke so I held off, until this year. I just snowchecked a Yamaha RS Venture with the 3 cylinder, 120 hp 4 stroke engine. I looked at the A/C, and Polaris also, but those have a turbo on them and my comfort level with turbos is still not good. The Yammie engine is naturally aspirated and has a few years under its belt so I feel a little more comfortable with it vs. A/C or Polaris. Was able to take an 05 A/C T660 out last week on the lake. Very impressive!!! Awesome power, great handling, and it was weird doing 60 mph and hearing only the wind and not the engine!!! Polaris does have the FST (Four Stroke Turbo) for 06. We looked at that at a Sneak Peek show. Good power (135hp) but we were not impressed with the cheesy windshield and the overall fit and finish. A/C, Polaris, and Yamaha all make good 4 strokes that will keep up with any 600 2 stroke, probably most 700's. Mileage is excellent and you can go over 200 miles on one tank. (Another main reason for me buying a 4 stroke). Comes down to which one you feel most comfortable on. They all have made power a non-issue now. Let me know what you decide. Thanx!!!

Just bought a Frontier Touring 2 up and we have no trouble keeping up with 2 stroke 2 ups. It's our first sled and I am extremely happy with it.
