Polaris Engine Mystery... Help?!?!

Hey guys,

I have an engine that's really interesting... I bought it thinking it was an RMK 700 with only 10 hrs, but just threw it in the back of the pickup and it's been months since that night. I just looked at it this morning and it's a 4 stroke! What?!?! Twin: yes. 2 stroke: no. I cross referenced the oil filter # (another 4 stroke hint) and it'll also fit a Sportsman 600-800cc engine. But this engine has the appropriate sled mounts and clutching to know it's not for an ATV. I also know my buddy had the engine in his garage for 4-5 years, which is why I got to razzin' him about selling it to me.

Here's the scoop on the engine: He was sold the engine by his cousin (I know... I know... "man drama") and was told that Polaris used the engine for research and development, ran it for 10 hrs and then set it aside. I guess there was a pile of engines that they did this with and I've now come across one myself. I was hoping it was a hot 2 stroke that I'd just put into an old chassis and *poof* I've got myself a cheap RMK project to bang around the ditches with...

Not so fast... It's not what I thought it was...

The serial number begins with "S", which I'm told means its for a snowmobile. There's also a stamp on the engine: 11/07/01. Date stamp? Anybody know what Polaris was doing around then with 4 strokes and snowmobiles? I don't even know what cc this engine is!!!

Any help for me out there? Any ideas what this engine might be?

The Polaris dealer up here is givin' me the run around and don't really want to help (I understand- they're busy with paying customers) so I'm just really curious... What the heck is this thing?!?!

Thanks guys...

Oh, on a sidenote, if pictures help in this mystery, here an ad that's got pics:

That's an engine from a Polaris Frontier, it's a 784cc twin. Check the Polaris on-line microfiche for 2002 Frontier and look at engine mounting... the drawing looks similar.

The Newest 4-Stroke Snowmobiles Are Quieter, Cleaner And Fast - Popular Mechanics

The Frontier had about 48 hp engine.. they were dogs at best...

BC_Dan,

You definately solved the mystery... thanks for your help!

I felt like a bit of a moron buying an engine that was WAY off what I thought it was, but now I can at least work with it a bit...

Maybe a kick butt go-cart? A winter project for me or someone else...

I appreciate your time... thanks again

48 hp in a go-cart would make it FLY

The Frontier had a reputation of being slow, sluggish, but dead nuts reliable. The rental fleets bought a ton of 'em.
