1999 polaris indy 600 xc sp smoking alot
i just bought a used 99 indy 600 xc sp. It was fogged before the summer and ive been running it occasionally in the garage and its still smoking TONS and its white-blue smoke. im wondering if it may be a head gasket letting coolant into hte chamber? or maybe its just warm weather and the fogging is taking a long time to clear out... anyone have similar problems or can anyone steer me in the right direction on how to come about resolving this.. thanks

If it was coolant, the exhaust would have a sweet smell to it.
It does take some time to get the fogging oil burnt out of an engine.
How long do you run it when you start it up?
You should run it long enough to get the exchangers warm to prevent condensation in the engine.

PUT THE SILVER HAMMER DOWN!!
Like RJ said, let it run until you can feel heat in the rear heat exchangers. The smoking should clear out when you get it up to operating temps on the snow...
welcome to the forum!

I jus ran it for a good 20 minutes. there was considerably less smoke after about 10 minutes, but if i hit the throttle it would smoke alot, i than shut it down for 5 minutes, tried to fire it up and it wouldnt fire up(usually does first pull) than i let it cool down and checked the coolant and noticed a small chunk of black grime floating around so i fished it out...

it's a 2 stroke. when you ride it things will get up to full operating temps and hopefully you will give it some throttle to clear it's lungs out. After a bit the smoke will dramatically decrease. My quad last weekend took a good 7-8 miles of trails to fully clean out and stop fogging up the woods it's just the nature of the beast.

Check the plugs or better yet replace with new ones...If your getting too much oil they most likely fouled. Do you have oil in the gas also?

Let it run awhile get it hot then shut it down and pull the plugs and see if you can here any hissing noise in the cylinders. if you do you could have a blown head gasket. the black stuff in the coolant could be oil that gets forced into the coolant when its running. If you here nothing let it cool all the way down and pull your drain plugs under your y pipe and see if any coolant comes out or take your carbs and reeds off and see if you can see any coolant in the cylinders

no hissing in the cylinders, i will check the drain plugs after it cools, i also just noticed what looked like dried coolant and some drops of coolant along the outside of the gasket on the pump, would this possibly be the cause of all my smoke?

no....the sled is going to smoke anyway. Mine will fill the backyard and the neighbours yard with smoke when I start it...Im surprised the neighbour didnt call the fire dept because she thought the deck was on fire....I wouldn't worry about smoke. I would worry about it when it stops smoking and all of a sudden you need a couple pistons and some cylinders. If it was burning anti-freeze it would run like crap and pook and bang and go on and it wouldnt be long before the water ate your pistons up....
Your needle and seats may be leaking letting fuel to drain into your base causing it hard to start...did you clean your carbs lately?

Keep watch of it. If you find it again, then worry.
My guess is that it was just some gunk from the bottom of the reservoir.

My brother has a 00 xc 600 with the liberty 600 it has the same issue. The smoke will go away after the coolant has evaporated from within the exhaust pipe. If after 20 min of running or riding its still smoking like cheech and chong you might have a bigger prob. For the cost of a head gasket I would take the head off and investigate.
