XLT engine year

I recently picked up a 1997 XC600 and the previous owner son had put an XLT motor in it (Not really sure why. Blown XC motor maybe) but he doesnt really know anything other than it is a 1997 XC600 and no clue on the history or of the motor.

Question I have is where and what numbers would I look for to find out the year of the motor. I havent really looked at it to much since I got it home. One of them deal of a lifetime in the right place at the right kind of things so I didnt look it over to hard. Just bought it and got out of there before the guy could change his mind. lol I think his wife was wanting him to get rid of it cause he just about changed his mind a few times on me.

Look on top of the pullstart. There will be a number there and the first two numbers will be the year. Unless the pullstart assembly has been changed it should be the year of the motor...

The first 2 number of the serial number on the pull starter cover is 97 so looks like I have a 1997 XC600 with a 97 XLT motor. Really wish it still had the XC motor in it though. Now to get wrenching on it and get it going for winter.

Thanks for the info. I didnt know that thats how you tell what year the motor is.

The real motor number on an XLT-XC engine is stamped on the lower crankcase half, just to the left of the oil pump. First two numbers are the year.

From looking at the Polaris website, the 1997 XC 600 had a 3-cyl. XLT engine in it. They didn't start building the big block 600 twin until 1998.

the pull start housing wont fit from a XLT and XCR i don't think...XLT has the water pump under the pullstart and the XCR has it in front of the engine that runs off the crank...

If thats the case then maybe it is the original motor. The guy didnt know much about it as it was his sons sled and wasnt sure if it was original or not. I was unaware that they used the XLT motor early on in the XC600s. Thanks for the info.
